These days in the marketing department of the VIKO Group we are preparing content for the group's specialized email marketing company , Mittum , and one of the things that occurred to us is to emphasize our extensive chemical manufacturers email lists in sending email, so we are putting together a small timeline of the most notable milestones since we started sending emails back in 1999.
'We' invented email marketing in Spain
And to recap, the phrase I sometimes say jokingly, that “we invented mass mailing or email marketing in Spain” is not so far from reality. I tell you, in 1999, Consupermiso was created , which together with canalmail and correodirect was one of the first permission email marketing databases in Spain, and obviously we had to develop the technology to send them since there was no “mailchimp” invented for that purpose back then, and pay attention to this, the available infrastructure was a server connected to a small hosting provider called Conexis with a 2xRDSI internet connection. Yes, although it may seem incredible today, at that time the internet worked with this type of connection.

Later in 2002, at the request of the marketing department of La Caixa, which had already begun to accumulate a significant email database and continued to collect emails from its offices, asked us to adapt our technology so that they could send email marketing campaigns to their database and analyse their behaviour, openings, clicks, etc.
And so the first SaaS email sending tool in Spain was born, after La Caixa. Between 2002 and 2005, Gas Natural, Mapfre, Banesto, FC Barcelona, Banco Santander, Caprabo and Serviticket began sending with us, and in Mexico, where we had begun operations with Consupermiso in 2001, clients such as Superama, Liverpool, Comercial Mexicana, Wallmart, Seguros Monterrey, undoubtedly making us the reference tool in both Spain and Mexico.
Tips and best practices in Email Marketing
In these years our infrastructure for sending email marketing in Spain had already grown significantly, we had moved our servers to Colt Telecom, we already had 4 servers and we had a bandwidth of 4Mbps.
Over time, numerous competitors have joined the email marketing market in Spain in all shapes and sizes, from the most popular and most focused on being a very simple and mass-use tool, to very complete CRM tools with integration of social networks, web space, and advertising formats, becoming very powerful marketing automation tools rather than push marketing tools. But among all this “mare magnum” of solutions, Mittum continues to have a prominent place, an email marketing automation tool with extensive segmentation capabilities and an enviable delivery capacity.
Just to give you some data: in 2015 we sent more than 1 billion emails , and we have a very representative client portfolio, with our main differential: deliverability and service. Now with a much more appropriate infrastructure, with four data centers (in Spain, the USA, Germany and Mexico) and 15 servers with bandwidths of up to 1Gbps.
