Carbon Offsetting: Greenwashing Your Conscience

Post by simarahman5835 »

I know it in advance, the next two points that I am going to address risk attracting enemies. But after all, I am exposing my vision of greenwashing. We can totally discuss it in the comments if you do not agree with me.

Before I explain my point of view, what is carbon offsetting? It consists of counterbalancing one's own CO2 emissions by financing projects to reduce other emissions .

Do you see where I have a problem with this? Offsetting your carbon emissions is like peeing in a violin.

Promoting carbon offsetting as an ecologically viable solution is a decoy . You do good for your conscience and your ego but the planet and biodiversity get nothing out of it. Most of the world's major groups have announced their carbon neutrality by 2050 ( as if we were 30 years old, in short ). And what does that mean in concrete terms? We continue to pollute as usual , or even more ( this is currently the case in the post-Covid19 crisis ). And to compensate a little for our bad impact, we are going to plant trees. No more problem then, right?

Well yes! Surprise, it takes several years, even decades brazil whatsapp number data before a tree is big and strong enough to absorb a large amount of CO2 . And then, trees work in symbiosis. Deforesting and then replanting destroys all life underground ( which represents about 50% of the power of trees by the way ). Yes, trees are essential to our survival and the proper functioning of the planet. But planting new trees, while continuing to emit emissions that disrupt the global climate, is not going to reverse the trend . Recreating an entire ecosystem that we are continually destroying cannot be done as compensation. It must be a priority.

Carbon offsetting is a trap and plays the greenwashing game completely . This solution serves the objectives of communication with the population. But it is insufficient because it does not encourage companies to truly review their model.

By offsetting your impact, you wash your hands and your conscience . You feel like you're doing your part. But you're not reducing the pollution you've emitted. ( I say "you" in this sentence, mind you, I'm not targeting anyone personally, we're generalizing here ).
