Dicker is often criticized for the lack of quality of his writing, but how can we explain that his books are so successful?

Because he understood that the book is “a relationship with people” .

Just like a good story.

I could give you another example. That of one of my favorite movies: Forrest Gump .

From the beginning to the end of the film, Tom Hanks' switzerland whatsapp iconic character tells us his story and his vision of American history.

He involves us in his narration as well as all the people who sit on the bench next to him.

If you've been following the series Mr Robot , exactly the same thing happens with the main character. Elliott speaks directly to us through the screen and the viewer feels like an actor in the character's life.

And there are plenty of examples like this in cinema, series and literature!

Don't give the reader all the information in your story
We were born to solve problems.

This is what we do every day.

And the absence of information in a story attracts us.

We want to know more, to find out for ourselves. We are not only attracted to kittens or babies because they are cute but also because they cannot fully express what they feel. So we make inferences. We can't help it.

Andrew Stanton (writer of Wall-E and Toy Story among others ) talks about the unifying theory of 2 + 2. The audience has to put it together themselves, don't give them the solution directly and let them make deductions.

It's up to you to give the elements in a precise order, you are the scriptwriter of your stories.

Storytelling has guidelines but no hard and fast rules.
Of course, telling a good story is not an exact science and that is what makes storytelling interesting.

Change is fundamental in stories because we learn throughout our lives. About ourselves, about our parents, about our children…

A good story is close to life. And life is constantly in motion. A good text is never static, otherwise it dies.

“Theater is anticipation mixed with uncertainty.” William Archer

When you build a story, you have to build anticipation.

You have to make readers want to know more, to know what will happen next and above all how it will end.

The best stories spread wonder.

Use what you know, draw from it. Creating a good story is about taking a truth from your experience and expressing the values you know.

Feel free to use the cultural reference for example…

Don't be boring in your storytelling
Read yourself again.

Do you find this boring? Start again or add some twists.

Don't want to know what happens next? Rework your text.

You don't get attached to the characters and the action is totally absent? Start over and over again.

The more you write stories, the better you will become.

And if you think your text is good, have it proofread by a third person. Take their comments into account and improve your text again.
